Senior Instructor of Independent Living- Including Benefits

The mission of the Helen Keller National Center for Deaf-Blind Youths and Adults is to enable each person who is deaf-blind to live and work in his or her community of choice. Authorized by an Act of Congress in 1967, HKNC is the only organization of its kind—providing training and resources exclusively to people age 16 and over who have combined vision and hearing loss. Students travel from across the country to our headquarters in Sands Point, New York, for on-campus training in assistive technology, vocational services, orientation and mobility, communication and independent living, and our regional offices bring HKNC resources to communities throughout the United States. We currently have an exciting career opportunity available to join the HKNC team as a Senior Instructor in our Independent Living Department. The Senior Instructor evaluates and provides training in the skills of Independent Living with consumers to foster a more independent and productive life style in the community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Recommends, plans, and provides training on Independent Living skills.
  • Facilitates activities related to Independent Living skills evaluation with the consumer to determine realistic short and long term goals.
  • Plans lessons and provides skills training in the above areas using specific methods and adaptations required to teach individuals who are deaf-blind.
  • Records progress and submits individualized reports in a timely manner.
  • Recommends appropriate equipment for consumers.
  • Works on activities related to Independent Living program development.
  • Provides information and advice regarding Independent Living programs and/or work methods to appropriate persons.
  • Provides information regarding Independent Living concerns to professional and other interested parties.
  • Provides assistance to consumers and professional staff members in out-of-department activities. d.
  • Accompanies and serves as a guide, provides visual and environmental information, and facilitates communication for consumers, professional staff members and visitors when assigned. To accomplish this, it may be required to use personal vehicle on occasion.


  • Master’s degree in Rehabilitation Teaching with an emphasis in Vision Rehabilitation Therapy.
  • Certified Vision Rehabilitation Therapist
  • Strong writing skills required for writing reports.
  • Knowledge of MS Office and Internet required.


Two years of experience with teaching individuals who are visually impaired or DeafBlind.

Proficiency in American Sign Language preferred, or will be expected to learn and to develop skill in American Sign Language and braille to a working level of proficiency.
